Glass House / Escape From Sobibor, The
Double feature includes "The Glass House" and "Escape From Sobibor" "The Glass House" - Based on a story by Truman Capote ("In Cold Blood"), this absolutely riveting, award-winning drama features Alan Alda and Vic Morrow in the performances of their careers. Mild-mannered university professor Jonathan Paige (Alan Alda) is sentences to one year in prison for manslaughter. He is completely unprepared for prison life, and once inside he refuses to adapt, although he does realize he is going to need some protection if he is to survive his term. He joins a gang led by the vicious Slocum (Vic Morrow) but discovers, too late, that Slocum may be more dangerous as a friend than as a foe. Featuring exceptional performances from its young ensemble cast, including Billy Dee Williams and Clu Culager, "The Glass House" is an example of the golden era of television film - a sensational, gripping, quality drama. "Escape From Sobibor" - One of the greatest escape films ever, winner of 2 Golden Globe Awards and a Writer's Guild of America Award, "Escape From Sobibor" is the fantastically gripping true story of the largest prisoner escape from a Nazi death camp. Living under unimaginably dire and inhuman conditions the prisoners at Sobibor have been beaten but remain unbroken. Their nominal leader Leon (Alan Arkin) has long been planning an escape but it seems hopeless, and the penalties for failure are fierce. The camp's Commandant has decreed that for every attempted escapee a randomly chosen prisoner will be killed. Leon bides his time, plans and waits. The sudden addition of Russian soldiers into the prisoner population gives him the perfect and necessary ally in Lt. Sasha Pechersky (Rutger Hauer). The two men hatch an audacious, daring escape plan that will attempt to free all 600 of the camp's prisoners.

Orrefors Glass by Alastair Duncan,
Orrefors Glass by Alastair Duncan,
Orrefors has a well-deserved reputation as one of the world's leading twentieth century art glass manufacturers. This new book by Alastair Duncan is the first major study in history of the output of the Oreffors factory will be of great interest to all collectors and connoisseurs of glass. In 1914-15, the first art glass creations, heavily inspired by art nouveau glassware from France and Belgium, were produced at the Orrefors factory in Sweden. Soon realising the need for an identity, the company experimented with techniques and forms of decoration and by the 1920s with the outstanding talented designers Simon Gate and Edward Hald and the excellence of the engravers, the firm was producing individual pieces of the highest quality. At the Exposition Internationale in Paris in 1925, Orrefors glass received international acclaim and was awarded the coveted Grand Prix. New techniques, such as Graal, Ariel, Kraka, Ravenna and Fuga, were developed at Orrefors while engraving, etching and hand-painting on glass continue to reach pinnacles of perfection. A separate section on the most prominent designers includes examples of their work, and a useful list of the marks to be found on the glass assists with dating and with the identification of both engravers and designers. The manufacture of glass and glass-making techniques are also discussed and illustrated.
